About Musculoskeletal
Medicine Specialists
Musculoskeletal Medicine Physicians meet strict criteria to be registered as specialists with the Medical Council of New Zealand, and hold the qualification FNZCMM (Fellow of the New Zealand College of Musculoskeletal Medicine). There are only a small number of qualified Musculoskeletal Medicine Physicians in New Zealand.
We are specialists in the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves), and are proud to provide the highest quality service, informed by the latest clinical research and evidence. And as members of The International Pain and Spine Intervention Society, you can be assured that procedures and interventions we perform are consistent with international best practice.

Professionalism
Patient-Centered Care
We provide care that is respectful, responsive, and tailored to the needs, preferences, and goals of our patients. We foster trusting and collaborative relationships, and empower patients to participate in their own care and decision-making throughout their clinical journey.
Lifelong learning
We are committed to continuous education and improvement to keep up with the latest evidence, standards, and innovations in the field of musculoskeletal medicine. Lifelong learning involves seeking feedback, reflecting on our own practice, and identifying areas of strength and weakness.
Iain graduated from Otago University in 1990 (with Distinction), and began life in General Practice. Over the years he completed further post graduate qualifications in Sports and Musculoskeletal Medicine (also with Distinction), working in a range of rehabilitation, pain management and musculoskeletal medicine settings, before successfully completing Specialist training as a Musculoskeletal Medicine Physician.
He most recently completed a Masters in Health Science endorsed in pain and pain management, also awarded with distinction. He has an academic appointment as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago.
Iain has worked as Clinical Lead for the DHB Community Musculoskeletal Medicine Service, and is now in full time Private Practice.
He travels regularly to Australia where he tutors Doctors and allied Health Professionals from around the world in point of care ultrasound, and runs regular courses in New Zealand (www.mskultrasound.co.nz).
He is one of a handful of Doctors in New Zealand holding the Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound (through the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine). This is only awarded to clinicians who demonstrate a commitment to ongoing training and competence in Ultrasound.
Clinical interests include interventions in pain management, point of care ultrasound, and acute and chronic musculoskeletal problems in adults, particularly spinal pain.
